Manuela Macco

Visual Artist and Performer, Italy
Manuela studied dance and painting; she graduated with a degree in History of Contemporary Art from the University of Turin. Her first projects investigated the rituals of everyday body language in an autobiographical style. She then began to observe movements of the body and how they appeared in public and urban places. This reflection on the everyday continued and developed through ‘feelings of the body’, from which her actions never dissociate themselves in the hope of producing physical and sensory experiences able to trigger processes of listening far from thought.

……………………………………………..The Weight of the Head

Can a relationship between the body and the mind bring about a social transformation? Through performances involving the residents and staff at Cittadellarte, the idea of real unity is explored and documented.

An existence based on the idea of ‘unity’ is not designed to conflict with the outside world. In Western societies, we are governed by a ‘dictatorship of the mind’, forever influenced by outside factors that determine the way we live our lives, yet it’s clear that this is not just a process of knowledge and understanding. Life begins from the moment we draw out first breath, therefore it is intrinsically linked with our bodies- a fact that we must always carry with us.
In collaborating with the staff at Cittadellarte to create a simple experience of ‘unity’, a performance in two stages is created where the participant is asked to question their identity and be at one with their surroundings. The first stage focuses on an individual performance, whereas the second is more group – oriented. All performances are documented on camera, and will be presented the finished product with a video installation. Through this, the artist hopes to suggest an alternative way of viewing our bodies, and how we live our lives.

…………………………………………………..Body Factory

Through the medium of film, physical actions taking place in a local factory are recorded and analysed, not only in relation to the way employees there work, but how their bodies are a reflection of themselves through their movements.
