Flávia Vieira

Visual artist, Porto, Portugal
Living and working in Porto (Portugal), she had studied at the School of Fine Arts in the University of Porto. Since them she has been exhibited her work in galleries and participated in several projects.
Her work seeks to keep in touch with controversial issues in the social world, in an attempt to reframe and reconstruct some dominant conceptions and paradigms of societal structures that were build by different kinds of power. The approach to these issues in her work involves the use of different fields like textile as a practice that reveals an historical tradition, as well the use of photography or video as a documentation of performative actions.

……………………………………………..Fabric Pilgrimage

Globalisation has affected the textile industry in Biella, and ‘Fabric Pilgrimage’ is a video installation documenting a journey of hope to Oropa, whilst knitting, for the survival of the textile industry.

The work is based on the context of the textile industry in Biella, as a representation of the globalized system. Through this work, the artist attempts to discuss the Biellese textile situation as a part and consequence of the global system of power.
The project’s approach to this issue involves a creation of a symbolic action directly connected to the physical space of Biella. The action consists of a walk, a journey, a trip, a form of pilgrimage to Oropa Sanctuary, at the same time during which she creates a piece of fabric from the wool she is knitting.
The creation of the fabric symbolises the hope and the faith to keep the factories alive. In the same way in which the pilgrim sacrifices and connects his body in other to reach a sacred place, the action of knitting represents the faith in the survival of the textile industry. Apparently distant, the Catholic Religion and the Textile Industry in Biella are close in terms of faith, beliefs and hopes.
