Yulia Usova

Curator, Kiev, Ukraine
Having an economic background, practical experience in corporate PR/marketing and a strong interest in the arts and culture, Yulia has graduated the Master course in International Curating Management at Stockholm University last March.
Her formal position as a curator is accompanied by projects and concepts, which though they do not always seem to have a direct connection with curating, that she feels are important in broadening the term and role, whilst widening the range of possibilities of different types and definitions of work in the field of art.

Initiative

‘Initiative’ is an exploration of art and its relationship with business, through case studies of examples of collaborations, projects at Cittadellarte and cooperation with a range of businesses. Yulia is looking to develop her research further, with the possibility of using ideas inspired from the residency by connecting up aspects of Cittadellarte, Biella and Italy with that of Ukraine. The project Initiative includes a series of formal and informal events that will serve as a starting point to establish a constant communication between business and culture in Ukraine. The project aims to engage UniCredit’s employees in different activities with the art community in Ukraine by holding lectures and seminars for young art professionals in Ukraine on project management, public speaking and negotiating skills.
‘Initiative’ also aims to develop research on the forms of cooperation between ’Art&Business’, as well as the case studies in Italy, in particular the UniCredit Group, Casa Zegna, A.I.M. and others.

Developed within “Unidee & UniCredit project – cultural strategies for local development” in partnership with UniCredit.

Curator as a Living Sculpture

‘Curator as a Living Sculpture’ takes as its starting point the encounter with an artist Manuela Macco and the notion of a curator. The project aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion of the role of the curator in the contemporary art world.

Yulia’s formal position as a curator is also accompanied by projects and concepts, which though they do not always seem to have a direct connection with curating, that she feels are important in broadening the term and role, whilst widening the range of possibilities of different types and definitions of work in the field of art. In the work, the living sculpture of the curator may remain silent, but it nevertheless serves as a reminder of this often symbolic role, as well as referring to current curatorial practices. The double figure on the photo image emphasises the double nature of the curatorial role as at the same time both symbolic and practical.

Black Chest of Collective Knowledge

(In cooperation with Loris Bellan, artist, Biella, Italy)
The aim of the interactive project Black Chest of Collective Knowledge is to remind us of an experience of creating and sharing knowledge and the value of this exchange.

The initial idea of the project derived from the artwork “Black Market” by an American artist Robert Rauschenberg shown in Amsterdam in 1961. Rauschenberg placed his own objects in a black box and allowed visitors to take one of his objects in exchange to their own ones. Eventually he was disappointed with the result of the project – many items got stolen and over time the contents of his box decreased in number.

In contrast to the exchange and accumulation of material objects, Black Chest of Collective Knowledge, created with Loris Bellan, deals with more immaterial values of knowledge. The philosophical story written by Bellan reminds us that all of us have a complex life journey that inevitably entails different experiences. On the one hand, such experience presents a value of its own, and on the other hand, if shared, it can become a real treasure. The end result of the work will contribute to the “Human Values Bank” project initiated by Cittadellarte’s Economics Office.
